You may have heard of PAT testing, but if you haven’t had it done before you might be unfamiliar with what it is. To strip it back to the bare bones, it’s an inspection of an electrical item which ensures it’s safe for use. Let’s go into a bit more detail about this service.

What Exactly Is A PAT Test?

A PAT test is comprised of a visual inspection and a safety check using specialist equipment. The equipment will check for any dangerous faults which aren’t visible to the naked eye. Once the test is completed, a sticker will be attached to the item which confirms whether it passed or failed. This will have the date and re-test date written on as well, so you won’t forget to get it done next time.

What Does PAT Mean?

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing. However, this name is a little misleading. It doesn’t mean that only portable appliances are tested. Instead, it means that anything with a plug designed to be used in a wall outlet.

What Items Need To Be PAT Tested?

All Class 1 appliances should be tested. These are electrical items which have the potential to cause harm. These items could include toasters, kettles, microwaves and fridges, among many other things. It also includes extension leads. Most Class 1 items are labelled with a symbol, so they’re relatively easy to spot. However, it is not a legal requirement for them to be marked, so don’t rely on this to identify everything.

Class 2 appliances don’t usually need full PAT tests. This is because they’re safer by design, with additional insulation. Items that come under this category include lamps, computers and photocopiers. They can still be tested, but they won’t need a full inspection. A visual check every year is also recommended.

Class 3 devices are battery-powered, such as mobiles, cameras and tablets. There’s little need to PAT test these, but their Class 1 charging cables will need to be tested.
