Home EV Charger Installation Guide

Close Up: Tesla Electric Autonomous Car Filling Batteries At Hom

Being the owner of an electric vehicle comes with many benefits. Not only are you reducing your reliance on fossil fuel, you’re also one step ahead of the game. With the government wanting to ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, it’s inevitable that electric cars are going to be the new normal in the future. We’re going to explain everything you need to know about EV charger installation in this guide.

Where Do You Want Your EV Charger?

Once you’ve decided a home EV charger installation is for you, you need to decide where to put it. Although in theory you could put it anywhere you like, there are places that will make installation much easier. The charger needs to be positioned near a fuse box, so the closer your desired location is to it, the better. If the fuse box is further than 10 metres away from the vehicle, you’ll have to pay more for a longer cable.

If you have a smaller driveway or parking space, make sure you account for which side the charging point is on. Ideally, you should plan for the charge point to be on the most convenient side. This way, you won’t have too many running cables or have to struggle to plug it in.

Visibility

Depending on where your property is located, you may also have some security concerns. Some people may wish to position their EV charger to the side of their property, where it isn’t so easily seen. This decision might also be made from an aesthetic point of view, as some may be concerned about how the charger will affect the appearance of their home. As long as the cable is still able to reach, you can usually put the charger in an inconspicuous place.

Mounting Height

You also need to consider the mounting height. An EV charger needs to be at least 75cm above the ground, as this reduces the risk of electric shocks. A charger that’s installed too low to the ground has the potential to be dangerous. As well as that, higher chargers are usually easier to reach, and therefore easier to operate. This is much better for those with back issues or people who struggle to bend down.
